GFCI and AFCI Outlets

GFCI and AFCI outlets are essential for modern home safety, helping prevent electrical shock, fires, and equipment damage. At Althoff Home Services, we install and replace these protective outlets for homeowners in Crystal Lake and the surrounding Chicago suburbs. GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are required in areas with water exposure, like kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoors, while AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets protect against dangerous electrical arcing in bedrooms, living rooms, and beyond.

  • Family owned since 1961
  • We provide quotes before performing service
  • 100% satisfaction guarantee

Our licensed electricians ensure your outlets meet code and deliver reliable, long-term protection. Whether you’re upgrading older wiring or renovating your space, turn to Althoff Home Services for safe, code-compliant GFCI and AFCI installation. Your safety starts with the right outlets, installed by professionals.

Proudly serving the Crystal Lake area for over 60 years!

What Are GFCI & AFCI Outlets?

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) and AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are critical components for home electrical safety. At Althoff Home Services, we install and upgrade these devices to help protect families from shock and fire hazards. GFCI outlets detect ground faults, where electricity strays from its intended path, often due to moisture, and immediately shut off power to prevent injury. These are vital in areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor spaces.

AFCI outlets, meanwhile, detect dangerous electrical arcing caused by loose or damaged wiring. These arcs can spark fires behind walls long before you notice a problem. AFCI outlets trip the circuit the moment they sense abnormal activity. At Althoff Home Services, our licensed electricians ensure your outlets are properly installed and provide effective protection that meets your home’s unique safety requirements and applicable local codes.

Where to Have GFCI & AFCI Outlets Installed in Your Home

While the National Electrical Code (NEC) outlines where GFCI and AFCI protection is recommended, it’s important to note that the NEC is not enforced nationally, it serves as a model adopted and modified by local jurisdictions. That’s why it’s critical to work with electricians, like those at Althoff Home Services, who understand the specific code requirements in Crystal Lake and the surrounding Chicago suburbs.

GFCI protection is generally required in moisture-prone areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages, laundry rooms, basements, and outdoor receptacles. AFCI protection is typically required in living areas like bedrooms, hallways, and family rooms. In many cases, dual-function outlets are recommended to provide both types of protection.

Our team stays up to date on local code updates and will walk you through exactly where GFCI and AFCI outlets are required, or recommended, for your home. We’ll inspect your current setup, identify gaps, and install new devices that meet both safety standards and local regulations.

Trust to Licensed Electricians to Upgrade Your Home’s Outlets

When it comes to electrical safety, outlet upgrades aren’t a DIY project. GFCI and AFCI installations must be done correctly to protect your home, and must comply with the latest local codes. At Althoff Home Services, our licensed electricians have the knowledge and experience to ensure every outlet is properly installed, tested, and positioned for maximum protection.

We’ve been family owned since 1961, and we always provide quotes before performing service, so there are no surprises. Backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee, we’re the trusted choice for safe, professional electrical service. Whether you’re remodeling, upgrading an older home, or just want peace of mind, contact Althoff Home Services to schedule your GFCI and AFCI outlet service today.

Althoff has helped us with our boiler system as well as our AC unit. They have repaired old units we had and even installed new ones when we needed. Everyone we worked with was kind, professional, and knowledgeable about the products.
Had difficult bulbs to replace and find they did it a short period of time and the installation was flawless

Matthew was such a pleasure to work with. He explained everything in layperson terms. Which I appreciated because I was extremely stressed out from the whole issue at hand. He gave me several different options to deal with the water damage and diagnose the source of the problem. of the leak. In conclusion, I would and will go to Altoff for all my future plumbing needs.

I recently switched to Altoff Services to do my annual A/C and Heater maintenance. They came this week to do the A/C. they did a thorough job in testing my A/C's cooling efficiency. they tested refrigerant levels. They removed the outside unit's shroud and thoroughly cleaned the unit. This was the first time anyone did that. I was very happy with the work they did.

We use Althoff Home Services for almost all of our HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical needs. Pros: - It is easy to schedule an appointment with them. If you are a member of their White Glove Club, you get priority scheduling. - They spend time explaining the work they perform and any recommendations they have. - Their pricing is transparent. Everything is quoted and sent via email, so you know what you are paying every time they come to your house. - Their employees do not work on commission, so there are no high-pressure sales tactics unlike some of their competitors. Cons: - Some of their services are a little expensive. I would hire a handyman to do things like re-seat a toilet or replace a faucet in lieu of hiring of one of their professional plumbers. - They charge to come out to your house to give pricing estimates, but will deduct this from your bill should you choose to use them. I highly recommend Althoff’s and their team of professional staff!
